about

Dunstan Coulber deserves great credit for showing that jazz from pre-Coltrane eras can still provide fertile soil for the development of a personal style. I’ll Be Around is an album which is really lovely to listen to, throughout, and who needs more than that?

Clarinettist and tenor saxophonist, Dunstan Coulber first came to the attention of the general public when he won the Perrier Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award in April 2000. Since then he has featured each year in the nominations for the annual British Jazz Awards. His talent has been recognised and encouraged by a number of world renowned jazz stars; among them Wynton Marsalis, Ken Peplowski, John Dankworth and Humphrey Lyttelton with all of whom he has played.

Dunstan formed The Dunstan Coulber Quartet early in 1999 with a clear idea of the music he wanted to be playing. Firmly rooted in the swinging mainstream jazz tradition, the Quartet have pursued Dunstan's aim of bringing a fresh, up to date interpretation to the classics of the great American song book and out-of-the-way standards.

What the Critics are saying about Dunstan Coulber:

"It's very encouraging to have such a dedicated young musician playing this music and keeping it so vigorously alive ... a swing clarinettist of fleetness and charm ... secure and decisive."
— Dave Gelly, The Observer

"Coulber plays everything with lightness and ease as if he's having the time of his life, his tone and his ideas bounce with life."
— John Fordham, Jazz UK

"...demonstrates that clarinet playing doesn't have to be steeped in the past."
— Roger Trapp, The Independent

"Coulber's approach is refreshingly robust and unfussy, his tone sure and precise without being dryly academic, his time and sense of swing near perfect. Coulber's arrival on the scene is a matter for some celebration."
— Chris Parker

"He achieves what he intends to with some fluency and polish and touches of delicacy. The high point of his style is the simple and straightforward way he presents the melodies allowing us to relish their superbly crafted cadences with little in the way of distracting embellishment."
— Anthony Troon, Jazz Review

"The album epitomises the enduring standards of good taste, swing, melody and inventiveness ... Coulber has a fully developed personal style based on Goodman and Shaw with seamless integration of more modern influences ... sheer quality and vivacity of playing."
— Bob Weir, Jazz Journal International

Dunstan Coulber London, UK

British reed player Dunstan Coulber is a prize-winning young mainstream clarinet and tenor sax virtuoso.
His playing confirms his steady expansion into an orthodox swinger of considerably greater breath.
Coulber shuffles affectionately through standards and injects his own kind of eager energy.
He won the Perrier Young Musician 2000 award and has quickly become well established on the jazz scene.
